One of my favorite parts of our preschool program, Mother Goose Time is that it easy to let all the kids participate at their own level. The activities and projects are wonderful for sibling bonding. Our whole family gets involved in playing the games, taking on STEAM challenges, and exploring books.
Here are just a few of the early activities we’ve completed with Nature Detectives!
Name Cards
There is always a name activity with the first day of a new theme. As homeschoolers creating a name card gives us the chance to practice our letter and name recognition and handwriting each month. We also use the cards to identify the kids’ monthly art projects.
This month the kids spelled out their names using letter cutouts. They then practiced writing the letters of their name. My oldest is practicing her signature in cursive.
Daily Topic Posters
The daily topic posters are awesome conversation starters. They also allow for the kids to volunteer what they already know about a topic and ask questions. Curiosity is a powerful motivator. The kids love discussing their topic posters over breakfast or lunch! Listening in on sibling topic conversations and debates is a huge perk of homeschooling. I’m also always on standby for some quick research recon! I adore hearing their questions and helping them find answers!
Make and Play Activities (Koala Puppet)
My oldest is very crafty and watching her develop her fine motors skills while making and creating has been a wonderful benefit of Mother Goose Time! My younger two get tons of practice with gluing, cutting, and drawing thanks to these projects. This Make and Play activity let the kids create their very own koala puppet, which was used in a ton of free, imaginative play. Watching elements of real life (koala bears live in Australia and eat eucalyptus leaves) show up in their independent play is so rewarding!
Theme Posters
The kids love the thematic posters that arrive every month. In addition to completing suggested activities, the kids also love to create their own games. My two boys are very fond of independently playing seek and find games. One will call out an item and the other will identify it with their finger or with a magnifying glass. My eldest two kids also enjoy creating stories based off the characters featured in the poster. I love how the posters fuel their creativity.
Books
The books suggested by Mother Goose Time are routinely winners for our entire family. This selection, Tap the Magic Tree by Christie Matheson is no exception! The book is interactive and encourages kids to actively engage with a beautifully portrayed tree as it journeys through the seasons of the year. I highly recommend this one!
Learning Together
Mother Goose Time continues to be a wonderful program for my kids to learn together.
Most of the time they aren’t even aware they are learning. For them, Mother Goose Time is a huge box full of art projects, challenges, and games.
Learning letters, numbers, shapes, and colors are all just part of the fun!
